Last week we mentioned that our Joburg Wine Club Gets Creative Event at Gandhi Square will be coinciding with Checkers’ super exciting #OddBinsArtistCollab launch.
Now, if you’re not sure what we’re referring to, let’s back track a bit first.
Have you ever shopped for wine at Checkers (which we highly recommend: their selection is on point!), and noticed some labelled ‘Odd Bins’?
These wines are basically Checkers’ in-house wine range, which consists of top estate wines from across South Africa that have been specially selected by an expert panel.
Each batch is given a unique Odd Bins bin number, relabelled and then sold at a fraction of the estate price. To add to the exclusivity, once the bin is sold out, the number is never repeated!
Despite curious consumer enquiries, the content of each bottle remains a closely guarded secret. All you have to know is that these batches are the result of cancelled export orders or simply an excess of great wine too good to go to waste.
What you may also have noticed about these Odd Bins wines is the fact that their labels are very simple and haven’t had a make-over in years!
Enter the #OddBinsArtistCollab.
To add a bit of spice to their exclusive wine range, Checkers commissioned four up and coming South African artists to create unique artworks to adorn the Odd Bins labels. The artists that form part of the first ever Odd Bins Artist Collab are Karabo Poppy Moletsane, Musonda Kabwe, Lauren Fowler and Rose Chaston.
Each artist was given a limited edition Odd Bins estate wine and asked to develop a unique design which encapsulates the specific varietal of that wine.
The result: two of the finer things in life - wine and art - brought together in a limited edition bottle.
The following wines form part of the first ever Odd Bins Artist Collab:
Odd Bins 331 - 2018 Chardonnay
A vibrant, medium-bodied wine with aromatic notes of fresh kiwi and delicate peach
Origin: Paarl
Odd Bins 244 - 2018 Sauvignon Blanc
Full-flavoured with good depth on the nose and aromas of citrus and passion fruit
Origin: Coastal Region
Odd Bins 840 - 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon
Well-rounded with a combination of dried fruit, berries and spices on the nose
Origin: Stellenbosch
Odd Bins 633 - 2016 Shiraz
Aromas of black cherry, truffle and black pepper with a velvety plum palate.
Origin: Cape South Coast
We attended the first launch at 6 Spin Street in Cape Town last week and were blown away by the exuberant creativity that came out of the collaboration.
And now we simply cannot wait to help bring all the good vibes, wines and energy to Joburg!
Tickets to our event on 27 October are R300 per person and will include entry to the #OddBinsArtistCollab launch and exhibition. Apart from this you will also be able to enjoy limitless tastings from our own wine partners, delicious harvest table food and beats by a local DJ.
PS. The Odd Bins Artist Collab wines will be available in Checkers, Checkers Hyper and Checkers LiquorShop stores across South Africa from end October 2018, just in time for the festive season.
